I've been in the data game from all angles for a long time--user, consumer, creator, vendor, investor, board member. It is hard to overstate how nice of a job you did framing it all out in this note. Thank you for the gift.

Great essay! Not a well covered industry

Will the rise of AI, will we see tech companies closing down access to their APIs?

They can either monetise data via licensing to AI or keep internal to guard their secret sauce

Kind of what Reddit did with their APIs

Fun fact on commonly used quote “data is the new oil” - it was coined by mathematician Clive Humby. Here’s the full quote:

“Data is the new oil. Like oil, data is valuable, but if unrefined it cannot really be used. It has to be changed into gas, plastic, chemicals, etc. to create a valuable entity that drives profitable activity. so, must data be broken down, analysed for it to have value.”
